We went to 196 Meze Bar early today as we hadn’t booked a table. It’s a small restaurant and it books up quick so it’s best to either go at an obscure time or book in advance. We’ve been here before and loved it, so we were definitely looking forward to going back again.
Initial Impressions
As I say, we’ve been before. The place is really small, but clean and well-lit. It has a nice, romantic atmosphere to it, and is a perfect date spot. One quirk of this restaurant is that the menus are photocopied prints and presented on a clip-board. It’s part of the down-home relaxed feel of the place.
The food
The menu is split into three sections: cold mezes, warm mezes, and main courses. The mezes are priced between £3.50 and £4.00 each, and are small but tasty.
We ordered the spicy sausage and the tzadziki for starters, I had the kofte and Kevin had the huntsmans stew. Both mains were good sized, melt-in-your-mouth portions that we didn’t have room to finish. Definitely try the spicy sausage (no giggling, you!). The house white wine, on the other hand, was pretty unimpressive. I’d go for a local Turkish beer, Effes, next time.
Overall
The food is what makes this place great. While there are other Turkish restaurants on Mill Road that we like better, 196 Meze still stands out as one of the finest spots on Mill Road.
