Why do Americans call it Guy Fawkes night but Brits call it Bonfire Night? … and as an American in Britain, what am I supposed to call it? Guy fire night? Bon Fawkes night?

Today, one of the KAUST scientists quite literally Today, one of the KAUST scientists quite literally took my son under his wing to view his research lab. My son was so happy to see and learn about the cutting edge research happening there. It's moments like this that shape a scientifically-minded child's hopes and dreams.

Big thanks to the research team who seemed energized by his visit and delighted to inspire his future.

I had the incredible opportunity to meet some visi I had the incredible opportunity to meet some visiting students from the US state of Oregon yesterday. They seemed so excited to be here and to learn about #Saudi and #KAUST.

I heard about their impressions and shared my experience as an American #expat in Saudi and a bit about the pace of the positive changes that are happening here at lightning speed.

This quote from Thomas L. Friedman from a recent New York Times really resonates: "If you have not been to Saudi Arabia in the past five years, you may as well have not been there at all."

Around once or twice per year we try to make it ou Around once or twice per year we try to make it out to go snorkeling on a private boat trip in the #RedSea coast off of #kaust.

On our most recent trip, the water was so perfectly flat that it looked like ice when we were cruising, and had 15+ meters of excellent visibility when we were anchored. We enjoyed snorkeling over a shipwreck and even saw a friendly pod of dolphins who swam along with us for awhile.

If you live at kaust, @kaust.life offers weekly group trips or you can do a private hire trip like we did. Cannot recommend this trip enough.

Had a great time at yesterday's #SciCafe hosted by Had a great time at yesterday's #SciCafe hosted by @kaust_research with Drs Imed Gallouzi, Leena Ibrahim, and Khaled Salama. It was focused on the topic of #SmartHealth. They talked about the future of medicine including topics like #onehealth #personalizedmedicine #precisionmedicine #medicaldevices #preparedness #ethics #privacy and more.

There is a significant focus on Saudi's national priorities in these areas. KAUST researchers are working with Saudi hospitals to lead these important strategic initiatives for the Kingdom and the world.

My favorite part was hearing the importance of scientists communicating about these developments to prepare the general public for the future of medicine. Such an important - but easily forgotten - step. SciCafe aims to do just that! 👏👏👏

If you look closely, you will find #olddiriyah mee If you look closely, you will find #olddiriyah meet #newdiriyah

In this photo, you see the remains of an old #mudbrick home, surrounded by farms of dates and veggies.

But look around to the right and the top of the image, you will see construction, a mobile tower, and dozens of the hundreds (if not thousands) of cranes that are building the new #Diriyah and #Riyadh.

... Bonus fact for those that are still with me...
My friend @sam.bakh's mother @dara_alsayyed lived in #Diriyah #SaudiArabia in her youth. She said it wasn't until the 1970s that mud brick homes began to go out of favor and replaced with cinder block construction in this area. There are still quite a few around which are homes, businesses, and museums.

#Vision2030 is happening sooooo fast in the Kingdom. Exciting times indeed!
